Big Sur Residence
Perched along the dramatic coastline of Big Sur, this contemporary residence is conceived as both a quiet retreat and a deliberate frame for one of California's most extraordinary landscapes. Expansive walls of glass dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, inviting the ever-changing light, ocean, and horizon into the daily experience of the home. At the same time, a restrained palette of weathered wood siding, Corten steel, and board-formed concrete grounds the architecture within its rugged coastal setting. The heart of the home is defined by two architectural elements that establish both its spatial character and emotional experience. A soaring, twenty-foot-tall glass wall anchors the great room, framing uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean. Opposite this transparent edge stands a monumental double-sided board-formed concrete chimney. Above, a custom triangular skylight washes the concrete surface with natural light, allowing the full height of the chimney to be appreciated even while seated.
